6 CommentsI am involved in a couple of fantasy football leagues, but my main one is on ESPN and has a couple of other well-known web celebs in it. When entering the draft I got the 12th pick so I had to come up with a strategy as to not get stomped this year. Seeing how the trend was to pickup RBs early, I decided to pickup QBs and use them as tradebait to get a key running back.
Three of my first four picks were QBs:
- Peyton Manning
- Carson Palmer
- Matt Hasselback
I figured Carson Palmer would come close to matching Peyton's numbers so Peyton would be my tradebait to pull a premier running back. It worked and I was able to pull a Peyton for Rudi Johnson trade, straightup. Rudi might not match Peyton's numbers for the season, but combined with Carson Palmer and Hasselback they should work for me just fine.
I also had a good feeling about Frank Gore so he became my #2 back. After trading Peyton I also picked up Chad Pennington, who is lighting things up so that gives me another trading option to upgrade my WRs. Here is my Fantasy Team and I would love to see what you got:
- QBs: Carson Palmer, Matt Hasselback, Chad Pennington
- RBs: Rudi Johnson, Frank Gore, Fred Taylor, Curtis Martin, Kevan Barlow
- WRs: Steve Smith, Deion Branch, Matt Jones, Troy Williamson (nasty pickup)
- TE: Kellen Winslow
- LB: Shawne Merriman (best defensive player in the league)
- DBs: Ed Reed, Sean Taylor
- DL: Leonard Little
- D: Chargers

That's a nice squad. I did the Yahoo! Fantasy this year for the first time with about 7 other guys. I unfortunately got 7th pick in the draft, but like you said, everyone went for the QB's first, so I was able to scoop up Peyton. I ended up with a real decent team considering my draft pick:
So it could be alot worse! How did I ever go so long without playing fantasy football?!

I would try and upgrade your RB situation. Bush and Deuce seem to take too many points away from each other and who knows how long Portis can hold up with his injury.
I'm sure Troy Williamson is sitting on waivers somewhere so I would take a serious look in his direction (with TO's out for 2-4 weeks). He is the #1 receiver on the Vikings now.

I definitely need to upgrade the RB situation, because Portis is screwing me over and I don't like having two backs on the same team for my squad.

Frank Gore has been my gem so far and I would look at Kevan Barlow over the next couple of weeks as he gets accustomed to the offensive scheme of the Jets.

WR - Chad Johnson (he's killing me), Marques Colston
TE - Kellen Winslow
I'm going to try and package Palmer and Thomas Jones for a topshelf RB like Tomlinson or LJ. I think that would make me unstoppable. I hope.

You gotta have Maurques Colston, the rookie from N.O.; I play in Yahoo, and he's one of the only guys who's allowed to pivot as a TE or WR. He's running things down there. Also, to anyone who drafted T.O., I've got a bridge to sell you...
