Like a lot of people, I hate running. The big problem is that it's one of the best cardio activities you can do to lose weight. Because I don't like it (read: it's tough for me cause I'm a bigger guy) it's difficult to make myself do it, so my compromise with myself is to get a road bike and get my cardio that way. My wife has been training for her first triathlon so she's in the process of buying herself a road bike as well.
So, any bikers in here that could give a tip to a newbie rider? I've been doing a lot of reading on bike manufacturers, components and drivetrain types, but it's tough to put it all together into one cohesive idea. Basically I'm looking for an entry-level road bike, could be new or used, and I care more about the quality of the components than the brand of the frame itself.

If you are just using it to exercise you really might be looking too hard into what type of bike. A simple one from Wal-Mart or Target will fit your needs fine and bikes in general are pretty reliable.
You are start going up in price when you start looking at the type of metal the frame is made from which effects the weight. Beyond that just pick up one you are comfortable with and hit the road.

I agree with Paul...you seem to be more concerned w/style over the substance of your exercise. Kinda reminded me of all the crazy writing exercises he wanted to explore back in his "need to write a book" day.
Unless you're going all Lance Armstrong, I think the only real thing you need to worry with is comfort.

Hey my exercises were quality...when I stick to them. You didn't do your Day 3 for pushups from what I remember! But yeah Mike, listen to the old man. The most important thing I found for me in a bike was the seat, the rest was just minor details.

Yeh...seat is priority number 1. Also important is the ringy bell...gotta have a good quality bell.

Oh and if you ride at night something that helps people see you.

I asked a friend of mine that is into bikes. He said go to the store and pick what is comfortable to you. What works for him wouldn't work for you because you're built differently.
Get a cool helmet and take a picture. :)
