World Cup 2006

The best World Cup in recent memory for me and everything played out the way I expected it to with a couple of exceptions.

The US. I think my post at Oreo CEO sums up my thoughts on this piss poor performance. All credit goes to Bruce for letting this embarrassment happen.

Brazil. Again the coach is at fault here for putting together the worst tactical scheme seen in this World Cup. If you have ever coached a soccer team you know that you have to create tactics around the talents of your team. Brazil is only good going all out on offense, not sitting back and trying to be patient. No reason the most talented team this decade should go out the way they did.

Germany. Biggest suprise for me. It was a joy watching them play and I've never said that about any German squad.

Looking forward to Euro 2008.

Germany played the best football by some distance, they even had Argentina on the back foot, who I thought till then were playing great too. Credit goes to the Italian players for sticking together even with the big scandal unfolding back home.

The biggest downsides of the whole tournament to me were the referees and Portugal. The refereeing was atrocious, and I think FIFA has to take the lion's share of the blame. They keep implementing strange new rules at every tournament, now there's talk Sepp Blatter wants to introduce another referee on the pitch and change the number of yellow cards it takes to get suspended. Crazy.

As for Portugal, I've never seen a bigger bunch of cheaters. Absolutely diabolical behaviour, especially from Cristiano Ronaldo. I think the one moment that epitomises the Portuguese squad was a game when Helder Postiga came on and his first move was to make a huge dive in the area with no one near him. I feel sad for Portuguese fans if they enjoy watching such football, it's even worse than watching England stutter.

I really enjoyed the Ghana v. Czech Republic game. It was one of those stories that makes something like the World Cup fun to watch beyond the favorites. Of course Brazil, Germany, Italy, England were fun to watch, but it was fun to see a team that no one expected much from to have a great tournament and make it out of their Group.

It was a great tourney in my opinion. Fantastic matches and all. I have to agree that refereeing should have been better and that the Portuguese should have dived less. I was lucky enough to watch the Germany vs. Argentina game live... that was a once in a lifetime experience!

I'm kind of surprised that I'm going to write something about the World Cup, because I'm not interested in that kind of sports :-)

I just must tell you that I saw my first soccer match IN MY WHOLE LIFE when we were in Ireland in June. England - Sweden played and we saw the game in an Irish pub in Dublin.

What surprised me were that the Irish people there wanted Sweden to win the game!

I actually thought that Sweden only played well the last 5 minutes of the game....
